HerStory II: Got to (Re)Create

The presented programme consists of four parts, bound by the concept of “HerStory”. The programme Got to (Re)Create presents the works of women storytellers who reverse and reinterpret conventional narratives reinforcing patriarchal world order with the means of perverse appeal and ironic perspective shifts.

Ciervo

Carmen

Short synopsis:

Carmen is a cinematic parody of Georges Bizet’s eponymous opera, one of the most frequently staged opera worldwide. The first image of Reiniger’s silhouette film shows Carmen flirtatiously smoking on a balcony. The sound of a fanfare heralds a regiment of elegantly marching soldiers.

Dekle in vojak / Tyttö ja sotamies / The Maiden and the Soldier

Short synopsis:

A strikingly realized poetic tale, based on an old folk ballad of a maiden who sets out to search for her lost fiancé in the turmoil of war. The beloved is found in a stationary hospital where the Grim Reaper is preparing for his gloomy task. The puppet animation was inspired by the poem The Legend of the Dead Soldier by Bertolt Brecht.

Vulkanski otok / Vulkánsziget / Volcano Island

Short synopsis:

Somewhere, on an oceanic island, the forces of nature are still at work as in primeval times. A young, naive female tiger lives there in harmony with herself and nature. When her awakening femininity is noticed by an older male tiger, the young tigress is getting more and more scared by his heated approach. But it is impossible to escape on the secluded island.

This short animation by artist and animator Evelyn Lambart offers a wordless plea for the right of all living creatures to a clean, unpolluted environment. With rich colour and intricate animated motion, the film features birds, butterflies and other woodland creatures succumbing to air pollution caused by human inventions.
