Pinscreen, 7+
3/12
16.00–19.00
Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova

In this workshop, you can learn about a rare animation device called pinscreen and use it to create images with light and shadows. The workshop is led by Alexandre Noyer, a French master of this interesting technique and pinscreen designer.

A pinscreen is a white, upright screen with a multitude of tiny holes into which thin pins are inserted. Pushing the pins forward creates a lighter surface, while pulling them back makes it darker. Side lighting creates shadows on the screen that can be shaped like drawings. This way, you can make images in various shades of grey – as if drawing with light!
In the workshop, you will use pinscreen to create images, photograph them frame by frame, and finally combine them into a short animated film.

Animated Video Game, 10+
5/12
16.00–19.00
City Art Gallery Ljubljana

The workshop will focus on creating original characters. It is important to design a character that attracts attention—for instance one with multiple legs, ten pairs of eyes, or unusual accessories that raise interesting questions about how such a creature would move, jump, or fly.
Once you design your character, you will animate it using stop-motion animation, shooting 12 frames for a simple walking loop. In Phase 2, you will transfer the animation to a digital environment and integrate the character into a simple video game, using the free apps Stop Motion Studio and Scratch, which you can later continue to work with at home. The workshop combines elements of illustration, animation, and the basics of video game development.

My World Set Small, 8+
6/12
17.00–19.00
Slovenian Cinematheque

The workshop involves a visit to a tiny film set, the world of animated film at the Tales from the Magic Garden exhibition, to see a forest of colourful birds and a miniature street that the filmmakers used during filming. Rather than on animation, this workshop will focus on set design and props. You will imagine the setting for your film and use various materials to make everything their scene will need: from miniature sweets, notebooks, and furniture to colourful stones, ponds, and magical objects. Once you are satisfied with your creations, you will take them to the exhibition’s animation station. After the workshop, the props will become part of the exhibition to be used by other visitors.
