This is a DIY workshop to create unique puppets that will come to life in a stop-motion animated film. You will learn the ABCs of planning, making the armature, and designing the puppet’s body and facial expressions, using various materials, such as wire, felt, plasticine, fabric, etc. The workshop is an excellent opportunity for anyone interested in animation and handicrafts who wants to use their imagination to create a moving picture.
Leon Vidmar graduated from the Ljubljana Academy of Fine Arts and Design. His animated short (In)tolerance, which he wrote, directed, animated, and designed the sets for, was shown at the 2010 Balkanima and Animateka festivals. Vidmar received additional training through student exchanges in Poland and Denmark. In 2013, as assistant animator, he worked on short puppet animation KOYAA – Flower, and with Špela Čadež on Boles and on the recap of Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black. His professional debut, short puppet animation Farewell, premiered at the 2016 Festival of Slovenian Film, scooping the Vesna Award for Best Animation. The film toured more than 80 festivals, winning seven awards, including the grand prix at Chilemonos and StopTrik. Vidmar continued his collaboration with ZVVIKS on Unwanted Things: Yesterday’s Newspaper, part of the animated feature Tales from the Magic Garden, which premiered at the 2025 Berlinale and won international prizes including the Eurimages Development Award. Vidmar is currently working on his new short, “Kriva pota/Mia”, which is funded by the Slovenian Film Centre and the national broadcaster, RTV Slovenija.
