The 22nd edition of Animateka officially opens with a programme that introduces the esteemed members of our international jury, kicks off the festival retrospective, honours the memory of the recently deceased Phil Mulloy, and voices support for Palestinians with a screening of films made as part of the project To Gaza With Love: A Global Anijam.

A non-narrative illustration of three musical themes from composer Modest Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition: Bydło sings the slow movement of foliage and the majesty of a bull walking through the morning mist, while Promenade offers a visual escape on a virtual wall, where animals, characters and phantasmagorical creatures are projected. Samuel Goldenberg and Schmuÿle suggests an allegory of the labor of the animation filmmaker faced with the demands of his poorly paid work, and his precariousness. Piano music by Alfred Brendel.

The film, which explores thoughts of the universe without making concessions or providing answers, is based on Michèle Lemieux’s Gewitternacht, a children’s book first published in 1996 and translated into 13 languages.
