The exhibition Shadow Tamers, which presents a unique animation technique for bringing shadows and engravings to life, invented in 1931 by Alexandre Alexeïeff and Claire Parker, has been extended until the end of December.

We reveal the winners of this year’s Animateka Awards in all four competition programmes. Who won the Grand, Student, VR and Elephant Jury prizes and which films impressed the audience the most?

Rise & Shine is a project development and pitching lab for first and second-time professional filmmakers with their short films (up to 20 minutes), organized by Animafest Zagreb and Animateka in collaboration with CEE Animation in three modules: focus on script, project follow-up, focus on pitch.

Ligia Soare, a cultural manager specializing in accessible film screenings, will present tools that filmmakers, festivals, and cinemas can use to ensure an inclusive audiovisual experience for people of all generations and abilities.

Along with other members of the audience, you can cast your vote and choose your favourite to receive the Elephant Audience Award. The Elephant in Competition II and III programmes are followed by Q&A’s with the filmmakers—an excellent opportunity to learn how animated adventures are made!

At AnimatekaPRO, during Breakfast with the Authors, moderators Igor Prassel and Chris Robinson, together with the authors from the Main Competition Program, discuss the creation of their films, their approaches, techniques, and everything in between.

Today’s screening of Tales from the Magic Garden in Kinodvor is accessible to the deaf and hard of hearing, and the blind and partially-sighted. In collaboration with House of Culture Cerknica as part of the project ‘Cinema without Barriers’.

AnimatekoPRO will begin with lectures by Pierre-Luc Granjon and Michele Lemiux and a round table discussion dedicated to this year’s pinscreen retrospective, at which the curators of this year’s retrospective, Jean-Baptiste Garnerro and Sophie Le Tetour, will talk about the interesting aspects and methods of working with this technique.

This year, the VR jury will be judging films in the VR@Animateka programme, immersive works that will be on display at Cirkulacija. They will award the VR@Animateka prize in the amount of €1,000.

AnimatekaPRO, which takes place at the Old Power Station, offers lectures by exceptional authors of animated film every year, whose films you can watch at our festival. This time, we will be joined by Pierre-Luc Granjon, Michèle Lemieux, Momoko Seto, Juan Pablo Zaramella, Elizabeth Hobbs and the creators of the film Tales from the Magic Garden.

The Children’s Jury is the one who decides on The Elephant Children Jury Award, for films in the Elephant in Competition programme. A monetary award in the amount of €1,000.

Pierre-Luc Granjon, the 2025 Animateka artist-in-residence, is a multidisciplinary artist and filmmaker whose work in animation and graphic design has been inspiring audiences for more than 25 years. The exhibition at the Kinodvor Gallery offers an insight into his film and visual art projects alike, tracing the artist’s creative journey, an amalgam of unflagging visual and narrative exploration.

We are presenting this year’s Student Jury that will give out Young talent: Student Jury Award, awarded for films in the European Young Talents Competition Programme.

To mark the premiere screening of the animated feature film Tales from the Magic Garden, a behind-the-scenes exhibition opened in the Slovenian Cinematheque Exhibition Venue. The exhibition is also on display during Animateka.

We present three feature-length animated films that families and their young ones can enjoy at this year’s festival. From the adventures of an unusual boy in a rainbow suit from the future in the film Arco, to the discovery of a mysterious forest full of birds and other animals in the film The Songbirds’ Secret, and a visit to a grandfather where magical fantasy stories come to life in Tales from the Magic Garden.

At the festival opening, we remember the victims of genocide in Palestine and, above all, our colleagues who provide art therapy for Palestinian children through animation workshops. TO GAZA, WITH LOVE: A Global Anijam invited animators and artists from around the world to create short 10-30 second animated messages of love and support to the Palestinian people. One selected film will be shown before each festival screening.

This year’s retrospective is focusing on the art of making animated films with the pinscreen technique. The retrospective brings together (nearly) all films made in this animation technique to date. Complementing this wealth of cinema are some of the key documentaries that introduce the pioneers and shed light on the history of this inspiring form of animation.

With a lot of effort, we carefully selected the best out of 952 short animated films, including 296 for the Elephant in Competition Programme, 369 for the European Young Talents Competition Programme, 260 for the Main Competition Programme and 27 for the VR Competition Programme, and classified them into four Animateka 2025 competition programs.
